How to Keep Yourself Uplifted

Everyday is not going to be easy. Some days you will shout for joy and other days you will cry for help. Everyday you are given two choices though. You can choose to be optimistic or you can choose to be pessimistic. 2021 has been a bittersweet year for me but everyday I smiled. I smiled because I got the opportunity to breathe again and I don't take that for granted.

One day my sister asked me, how do you do it? How do you stay optimistic all the time? My answer is thought work. I started paying closer attention to my thoughts and then I chose to adopt a positive mindset. Life is too short to waste it on negativity.

Here are 4 Things You Can Do to Keep Yourself Uplifted:

  1. Listen to a podcast

  2. Read a book

  3. Write in your journal

  4. Join a support group

Listen to a podcast:

I listen to podcasts because I love hearing different perspectives on a variety of topics. The podcasts I listen to frequently educate, motivate and contribute to my personal growth. I typically listen to at least one podcast or motivational video a day and that helps boost my mood. My favorite podcasts are Let’s Skip the small Talk, Social Proof Podcast, Side Hustle Pro, Woman Evolve, and Powerhouse Women. My favorite motivational speakers are Tyconis Allison, Eric Thomas, and Sarah Jakes Roberts. They have all impacted and shaped my life in a different way.

Read a book:

I read for 30 minutes everyday because reading brings me joy. Once a month I host a book club meeting for Black/ African American women and it gives us the opportunity to share our stories and relate to one another. There's nothing like having meaningful conversations. Reading can positively change your life because it reduces stress, stimulates your mind, and improves your communication skills. I enjoy most genres of books but I love self help books and memoirs. I love hearing people’s stories and learning what experiences made them who they are. I highly recommend that you read More than Enough by Elaine Welteroth.

Write in your journal:

Journaling is life. Journaling helps you gain confidence, keeps your thoughts organized, and evokes mindfulness. Journaling also helps you slow down and embrace the moment. I don’t know what I would do without my journal! It is my confidant. I aim to journal for 5 minutes a day to release my thoughts. Whether it is guided journaling, bullet journaling, or free-writing, any type of journaling soothes me.
